Bryce Grossen graduated from Monroe High School in November 2022 and started taking general classes at Madison College in the Pre-Veterinary Technician program in January 2023.

He continues to work for the Brodhead Vet Med Center, a relationship that began during his time at MHS. Grossen started out doing lawn mowing and painting for the center as a summer job when a position became available for a veterinarian assistant. “It was a perfect fit for me,” he said.

Grossen entered the SOAR program — Student Occupation and Academic Readiness — in June 2020, the summer before his junior year of high school. Grossen asked the center if they’d be interested in joining the program and taking him on as an apprenticeship student and the center agreed. The SOAR program provides students with career exploration opportunities, for which they both get paid and receive high school credit.

The holiday season is often a time for excitement, especially for school-aged kids looking forward to Christmas break. The week off can also be stressful, though, for kids who rely on the food they would normally receive while at school.

Serving the community for more than seven decades, the Monroe Christmas Stocking Fund (MCSF) continues to address this gap firsthand by collecting donations and preparing food boxes for local families. Miguel Aragon, a 2021 graduate of Monroe High School, knows firsthand the impact of those special deliveries.

After nearly two years of pandemic life, the isolation and high stress levels have taken a toll on our collective emotional health. For those struggling with these new challenges, it may be time to seek professional assistance. Green County residents have access to emotional health resources for all ages, addressing a variety of life’s challenges.
One of those resources is Jacob’s SWAG Foundation, founded by Teri and Kurt Ellefson in 2013. The foundation was established to raise awareness about mental health issues and suicide in an effort to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health.

Amy Campbell had long been searching for a place to open her own business, somewhere that was casual and accessible to everyone. In 2020, she found her perfect storefront in Monroe.

“We want it to feel like everybody belongs there,” she said. ‘I think there was a time where it was good for salons to feel and look very exclusive and we don’t want to be part of that.” Campbell, owner and stylist at Evolve Hair Salon in Monroe, opened her Monroe location — just south of the Square — in December 2020. The space began as a lawyer’s office — she and her boyfriend remodeled it into a four-chair salon. Evolve Hair Salon provides all hair services from cuts and color to highlights, perms, shampoos and styles. The salon also offers facial waxing. Campbell said while most of her clientele are women, she also serves a mix of kids, men and older adults at the salon.
